Key to happiness

Key to happinessA five-year study of more than 10,000 adults in the UK has shown that men and women link their own personal happiness with that of the welfare of their nearest and dearest, despite showing it in different ways.

Whilst men are motivated by earning money and women by securing a happy home life, researchers found that behind those different answers lay the same motive - that a happy and settled family life was the key to happiness.

More than 10,300 adults from 5,500 households across United Kingdom were surveyed on what affects their quality of life between 1997 and 2002 as part of the British Household Panel Survey.

When asked what they considered most important for securing their own quality of life, more than a third chose health, family and finance. Only 38 per cent of men singled out family as an explicit consideration, compared with 49 per cent of women, but many explained their concern over finance in terms of a need to earn a decent wage to support their loved ones.
