Why Dads Matter

Once upon a time there would be no question mark here - kids had a Mum and a Dad - that's just the way it was. But society is different now, and the question 'do Dads matter to kids?' is now just that - a question. Can a single Mum bring children up without any input from the 'father'? Does being around for your children make any difference to their outcomes in life? Evidence certainly suggests it does, but how do you work this out - the realities of life, relationships, and work make 'being there' difficult, if not impossible for many men. Articles discuss these issues and give hope to fathers who want to be more than just a sperm donor or income-generator - they simply aspire to be 'Dad'.

Unmarried fathers should be expected to sign their child's birth certificate

Calls have been made by leading figures and thinkers in the parenting world for the default expectation to be that both parents sign the child’s birth certificate even if they are not married. A letter has been written to Sarah Teather, minister of State for Children and Families.

A mere expectation, with no pressure, would result in about 30,000 more fathers every year signing a birth certificate.

Dad saves newborn son from drowning with mobile phone torch app.

A DAD told yesterday how he used a mobile phone torch to save his newborn son when he was dropped in a hospital birthing pool during a power cut.

Callum Livie’s partner Samantha Preedy gave birth to son Braedan in complete darkness after the lights failed at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Milton Keynes dad raised funds to set up a new hospital suite for bereaved parents.

A Buckinghamshire man whose baby daughter was stillborn said a new hospital suite for bereaved parents would make a big difference.

Simon Gill, from Milton Keynes, raised more than half the funds for the Butterfly Suite, a dedicated room on the labour ward at the town's hospital, which parents can use before, during and after delivery of a stillborn baby.

Children win legal right to see both parents after divorce.

Children are for the first time to be given the legal right to have a proper relationship with both their parents after a divorce, The Telegraph can disclose.

Ministers intend to rewrite the law in an attempt to ensure that fathers get improved access to their offspring after a marriage breaks down.

Currently, family courts decide to leave children with their mothers in the vast majority of divorce cases.

The second reading of the Children (Access to Parents) Bill is scheduled for the 20th Jan.
