Back You are here: DadTalk Steve What was the best bit?

What was the best bit?

The question you always get after nine months of global travel: what was the best bit? This an impossible one to answer, way harder than the “which one is your favorite child?” question, which we all know the answer to but do not dare say (just joking!)

We had an amazing time. I’m really missing the roughing it bits: the tents in the deserts; the tarantulas in the bedroom. At the time it was rubbish, but with hind-sight and the full knowledge I do not have to do it again, I really miss these bits.

The adventure bits also give you the happy memory flash back; snorkeling over coral reefs surrounded by multi-coloured fish, clinging on the back of an elephant while trying not to let go of a small child, making a campfire in the jungle.

At the same time there are the “this is just amazing moments”; lying on the roof of a tiny ferry as it chugs up the Mekong, being surrounded by 20,000 year old Aboriginal art in a scorching deserted valley, getting lost in a bizarre dumpling theme park in a Tokyo shopping mall.

But travelling has to end, you can not live like this. To be sure life, is a lot duller now. The most exciting thing is choosing which sandwich to have from Greggs. But in the end you need to belong to a place, actually see your family and friends rather than just skype them. Unfortunately I think you also need the discipline of having to go to work and do all the stuff that this entails (principally being nice to people you do not like). It good for the soul and the bank balance.

So currently my best bit now is planning the next trip - not so long but hopefully with many of the goods bits.
