Borneo Luxe

We are currently in Borneo – but this is not the Borneo I imagined. We have started our adventure at a luxury resort; thanks very much to the in-laws who are paying for this as we meet up with them for the first time in over five months.

The children love the kids club, the joy of which may be summed up in the sign by the front door “No Parents Allowed”. Masses of toys, books and lots of other children; all the stuff they have been starved for the last few months. Expect for meal times we hardly see them. Rather worryingly Dickon also says he loves it because unlike me the grown-ups do not shout at you – I do not shout that much - DO I?!

We are therefore all rather enjoying 5 days of not having much of each other’s company. The kids’ club staff must think we’re terrible parents as we wave goodbye to our children straight after breakfast each morning. However if we suggest something else we have an ugly mutiny on our hands, especially from Dickon, which would of course require me to shout at him.

These five days of luxury will all too soon come to an end. However it does feel very unreal and with our stained clothes and “travellers” mind-set, I at least, feel like an imposter. Munching Caesar salad surround by Brits and Aussies was not the Borneo I had in my mind’s eye.

Next week will be all about sleeping on mats in long-houses and jungle bugs. It will be interesting to see how the children will adapt to yet other massive contrast. It should be noted Eve has adapted to 5 star luxury with stunning easy – although I also fully expect her to be throwing herself into mud pits next week.

While this is lovely it does remind me how lucky we are to have so long to travel, and not just have a few days to spend in splendid, rather isolated, luxury. For now however we are enjoying cocktails by the pool with the children in the kids club, however short-lived and unreal it is.
