Adlai is On the Move

Before last week, Adlai had only taken one step at a time on his own before crashing down on his nappy-cushioned bum. We even got excited one evening a couple of weeks ago when, as we were Skyping with my brother and sister-in-law, we tried to get him to show them his one step and he surprised everyone with four in a row. Show-off.
After that, we expected him to start walking on his own, but a week or so went by with no movement from his chubby legs. Until last Wednesday, when I got a text from Faith at work: “Adlai just took about a million steps!”
After my initial shock at my 14-month-old taking enough steps to run a hundred marathons, I sent a text back to say I couldn’t wait to see these so-called million steps for myself.
That night I went home and an excited Faith met me at the door with a grinning Adlai. After our usual hugs and Faith clearing up that Adlai had, in fact, taken only 15 consecutive steps rather than her slightly exaggerated million, she was able to get him to focus long enough to take a few unsteady steps toward me. I counted – there were 9. Not a marathon, but I’ll take it. He could only manage the walking show once because he got so excited that his laugh knocked him over before he could catch his balance on the second attempt.
I was proud of him, but not quite as proud as he was of himself.
There a few things my son loves: balloons, milk, Iggle Piggle and Chuggington. But I don’t think there’s anything he loves as much as a good hearty round of applause from his Daddy and Mama….or anyone within earshot for that matter.
