Pee

When one of my boys was around three years old he was desperate to do something that was outside the box of normal social etiquette. He wanted to drink his own pee.

I don't know why or where he got the idea. It certainly wasn't from me. However much we discouraged him, we couldn't seem to convince him that it was a bad plan.

One morning when I got him out of the shower he looked at me as he stood there wrapped in his towel.

"Dad?"

 "Yes, son?"

 "I peed in a bottle."

 "Really?"

 "Yes I did."

 "Oh."

 Silence.

 "Then I drank it."

 "You drank it?"

 "Yup."

 "Wow. How did it taste?"

 Thoughtful silence.

 "Disgusting."

 "Hmm."

I didn't tell him off. I didn't need to. Of course there are times when parents have to draw a boundary when behaviour could harm others or permanently harm themselves. But inside of that boundary, some things are better learned the hard way. Kids are smart - they work it out. When faced with the consequences of their actions they make a new plan and change behaviour.

Oh, and he's never done it again.
