Mind over Man

The recession is having huge negative impact on mens mental health, according to a report published by Mind

The recession is having huge negative impact on men’s mental health, according to a report published by Mind, the mental health charity. The report, based on a survey of more than 2,000 people, demonstrates that a men’s mental health strategy is needed to match the existing mental health strategy for women.

Worrying evidence in the report indicates that nearly 40 per cent of men are currently feeling worried or low, but 31% would feel embarrassed about seeking help for mental distress. The study also found that middle aged men are seven times more likely than women to have suicidal thoughts and only half as likely to talk to friends about problems. Currently, men account for 75% of all suicides.

According to the report, the top three issues playing on men’s minds were: job security, work and money.

Jeanette Skipsey, Training Manager for Mind, underlined the importance of a renewed emphasis on men’s mental health. In her view, this is an area that has been neglected by the government. Local Mind centres are tackling the issue with a number of innovations including ,’Healthy Minds’ courses to promote self esteem, as well as a 6 week programme which includes preparation for employment, work experience placements and mentoring support for those on work placement of engaged in long term study. The programme so far in many areas has attracted a predominantly male audience. Bedfordshire Mind is also working closely with Job Centre Plus, focusing on getting people who have suffered from mental health issues, back into employment.
