Legal advice - how to find a lawyer and websites offering specific advice

For specific legal advice...

How to choose a lawyer –

  • Ask your friends for a recommendation
  • Research who the lawyers themselves rate: www.legal500.com or www.chambersandpartners.com
  • Be prepared for the first interview – write down notes and bring any relevant paperwork so you have all the facts to hand.
  • Lawyers usually charge by the hour – ask about the charges when you make the appointment and before you agree to any work.
  • Organisations such as Resolution and the Family Mediators Association specialise in family law.
  • The Law Society represents solicitors in England and Wales; their search engine may help you locate a solicitor who specialises.

Citizens Advice Bureau - helps people resolve their legal, money and other problems by providing free information and advice from over 3,200 locations, and by influencing policymakers.

Community Legal Advice is a free, confidential legal advice service funded by legal aid.

BPP Law School offers free advice via their student advisors (supervised by qualified professionals)
