Boobs, penises, and pregnancy

Okay, so that got your attention.

Thankfully the need to sit down and talk to my boys about sex is a long way away, but even a four-year-old asks body questions, and every time someone we know has a baby the age-old “Where do babies come from?” gets asked.

Trying to explain why mummy has boobies and daddy has a willy can be a tad embarrassing, especially as my kids always seem to ask at the most inappropriate times - like when we have Grandma over for tea or in the queue at the supermarket checkout. But I want to be one of those dads who aren’t embarrassed to answer the question.

However my biggest issue currently is: How far do you go in answering the question?

At 9.00pm tonight, Channel 4 launches its four-part Sex Education Show for teens. Hosted by Anna Richardson, the show covers issues around boobs, penises, and pregnancy and ends with how to communicate to our kids about sex.

If you’re a dad to a teenager, do you have a sex ed plan? Will you buy a book and leave it discreetly in their room, will you sit them down on the sofa and squirm through a dvd together, or do you intend to leave it to someone else to fill them in?

Do you think programmes like this help support us as parents, or do they just take away the need for us to get involved altogether?

Research shows that where we dads have a good relationship with our teenage children there is a reduction in the likelihood of them engaging in underage sex.

If you’ve been looking for a good way to start the sex conversation with your teenager, The Sex Education Show could be the right programme for you to watch tonight.

Although I’m sure lots of teenage boys will watch it in secret for other reasons!
