Men recovering from recession faster than women

Women's wages may have surpassed men's during the recession but new research suggests women in the workforce are recovering at a significantly slower pace.

According to the Institute for Women's Policy Research/Rockefeller Survey of Economic Security, the theory of a 'mancession' is little more than a myth.

Between 2007 and 2009, on almost every measure of insecurity - difficulty paying for food, health care, rent or mortgage - the study reveals hardship has hit women staggeringly harder. And nearly half of young women aged 18–34 have reported unemployment for at least one month in the previous two years, according to the data.

Women and Men Living on the Edge: Economic Insecurity After the Great Recession showed that paying for basics like food, 15million men were affected, compared to 26million women; 34million men struggled to pay for health care, compared to 46million of the opposite sex.

And the numbers continue to show high disparities. Rent or mortgage (32million women and 25million men); transportation (37million women and 28million men); utility bills (41million women and 27million men).
