George Osborne is to preparing to water down plans to strip middle class families of child benefit in an attempt to head off a back-bench rebellion.
The Chancellor had previously said that from January 2013 anyone earning above the 40 per cent tax rate threshold of £42,745 a year, would lose child benefit.

The figures are thought to be the first forecasts on the extent of the Government’s decision to cut child benefit for well-off families.
