This week is Road Safety Week 2010 which is organised by Brake, the road safety charity. It’s a community event open to all, with thousands of participants including schools, companies, emergency services, and community groups. The theme for 2010 is 'Kids Say Slow Down' and the Week is taking place 22-28 November.
The figures that the campaigns website mention make harrowing reading - Last year in the UK alone; 70 children were mown down and killed while walking or cycling; 2,470 children were left with serious injuries, including life-shattering injuries such as paralysis, brain damage or limb loss; and 11,179 children were left with cuts, bruises and mental trauma from, out of the blue, being hit by a vehicle while they were walking or cycling, often on their way to school or back.
According to Brake despite being international leaders in road safety, with the second lowest road death rate in the EU, we lag behind many other countries when it comes to protecting children using roads. In the UK, our child pedestrian death rate per population is worse than 10 other EU countries, and eight times higher than Sweden’s.
Brake believe that 20mph should be the default speed limit for towns and villages, especially around homes, schools, shops and community facilities, where there are likely to be pedestrians and cyclists.
Is your child school involved in this year’s event?
