Fathers Day round the world

It's nearly Fathers Day, at least if you're in Luxembourg.

It's nearly Fathers Day!

...well it is if you live in Luxembourg... the first Sunday in October is known as 'fete des peres'.

Like many of our current holidays & celebrations, Fathers Day originated in the United States. A young lady by the name of Sonora Louise Smart Dodd was inspired by a sermon on Mother’s Day to honour her own father, a civil war veteran who had raised his six daughters alone following the death of their mother. The first Fathers Day was on June 19th 1910 and in 1972 President Richard Nixon signed a law making Fathers Day a permanent celebration (guess he didn't have pressing matters such as the war in Iraq or global financial crisis to deal with - although incidentally the same week he signed this law, a certain building in Watergate was broken into...)

Never mind all that, as a Dad you deserve to be 'celebrated' so if you feel you somehow missed Fathers Day this year, or just feel your family should remember it again, let them know it is officially Fathers Day this coming Sunday... either leave out the Luxembourg bit, or turn it into a geography lesson (see http://www.luxembourg.co.uk/faq.html for some help here).

The number one gift for Fathers day is... a tie. If you don't need another one, you could encourage your children (not their mother) to make a nice meal, bake a cake, or check out www.presentsformen.com for further inspiration. Happy Fathers Day!
