Memories of swearing and stupidity

It is funny what childhood memories stay with you as you get older. Most of my treasured memories revolve around my brother swearing or vomiting. At the time the incidents were fairly unpleasant but as time passes there is a great deal of comedy in what happened.
I found myself remembering these incidents whilst watching my two girls play together. I was trying to work out when my earliest memories were and see if my girls were yet at that stage. I am really keen to make sure that my kids have some fantastic memories of their childhood.
Anyways, I was about nine years old and I was sitting in the kitchen waiting for mum and dad to serve dinner. My younger brother comes charging through the door with a huge grin on his face. He must have been five at the time and so had no idea what the consequence of his actions would be. I turned and looked at him as I could just sense that something was about to happen.
My brother looked up at Mum and shout “Hey Mum, f**k you and s**t and f**k off”. I fixed my brother with a wide eyed stare, mouthed the word “no” slowly and shook my head like I was a bit part player in a horror movie who could see the victim was about to meet a nasty end.
It is amazing how a few innocent words can change the temperature in the room. It is also amazing how I, my sister and my cat decided that we all remembered that we needed to check on something in another room and bolted for the door.
The last image that this memory has is my brothers grin turning into shock and tears when he realises that he is about to experience the full force of my mum’s fury.
These memories are really important. Even the strange ones that typically don’t sound happy are in fact vital to our growth and development.
In the Simmonds family we all learnt that swearing at your mum is a bad idea and that my brother is not bright.
