My two sons and I started our own reading club. We agreed that I would choose the books and we would each choose three themes to discuss from each book.
When they were very young my wife and I read to each and all of our children. This slowed down when they could read for themselves although at one stage it became a family/group ritual. By the time they were emerging from primary school our home had a culture of reading (balanced with TV).

I work for a church (Hey, come back! I promise not to quote the Bible or call you “brothers and sisters”) and part of my job has been to run the student department of my last two churches. This has involved offering a range of pastoral support to a number of students from all walks of life. I have encountered a variety of different issues being faced by a variety of different students, from the guy who blew all his money in Fresher’s Week, to the girl who was drunk throughout her first year, and to the many that adapted with relative ease to University life.

Ofsted inspections were set up in 1993 to provide a “comprehensive and impartial picture of how well a school is performing.” Yet they have attracted all sorts of controversy: the inspections bring about a great deal of stress for teachers; damning or glowing ratings cause sensations in the playground – and the media; and parents even move house on the basis of an Ofsted report. But do the reports really tell us parents all we need to know about our children’s existing or prospective school(s)? Not necessarily, it seems.
