Wood they or woodn’t they? A battle with the dark side!

There are normally shouts and cheers when I say to the boys that it’s a “Let’s go to the woods” Saturday. But on this particular Saturday there were no shouts, whooping or manic scurrying for boots. Instead an air of apathy and greyness hung over the idea of venture outside the house for our usual exploit of tree climbing, dam building and stick hunting. What was different? Why had this Saturday borne the brunt of indifference?
It appears that the boy’s lethargy was rooted in the need for a cartoon fix! Now as all my mates know I am a total addict when it comes to Ben 10 and Star Wars the Clone Wars but the sun was out and my mate Phil was up for joining us with his kids. It was the perfect wood Saturday and there was no way I was going to let young Mr Tennyson and the ongoing battle with Count Dooku and his droids keep us indoors.
I won’t bore you with the daring battle that followed but let’s just say I went Ultimate Humungousaur and total Jedi on the boys and overcame the Dark Side.
The next few hours are a total blur of walking the Bridge of Destiny over the Chasm of Doom , fighting with Lightsabre sticks as we rescued Megan from the droids of Treetrunkia (not all the kids were into Star Wars!!), building shelters from the deadly Winds of Annihilation that rage through the forest of Endor and fighting rebel forces by blocking the rivers that run through the jungle moon of Yavin 4.
When the battles were over and the dark force vanquished by Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Four Arms (Harvey prefers Ben 10), there was much to celebrate as 2 dads took their heroes home.
Conclusion: Getting outside is a lot of fun!! I love our “Let’s go the woods” Saturdays!
