The Sensitive King and the Confident Child

It’s that time of year where tea towels and dressing gowns take centre stage along with Kings dressed in tinsel edged robes and Disney Princess Angels. The School Nativity is a long tradition that I remember with great warmth from my own childhood, but yet so much seems to have changed, the Disney Princess Angels being but one example!
Over the last few years we have seen Shepherds with mobile phones and Kings with sat navs to guide them to the stable. There have been Angels that rap and Inn Keepers who suggest Joseph tries the Premier Inn down the road, which is of course met with much laughter from the gaggle of us watching parents.
Yesterday it was Jasper and Harvey’s annual production. Jasper was a King, seems fitting for one with such a name and Harvey was an excited child, again nothing like type casting!
This year was similar to other years, except this year I got to realise just how sensitive a child Jasper is. On the outside most folk would say he is confident and carefree but this last 6 months we have grown to realise that J is actually very sensitive and so standing up on stage in front of 500 people was a massive deal in self confidence.
As the big day approached he got more and more silent until on Saturday evening he burst in to tears saying he was scared about going on stage. We spent the next 30 minutes talking about our emotions and the difference between being nervous and scared which really helped him work out what was going on inside.
He got up on stage yesterday and said his lines perfectly and most folk there would never have guessed that the little king in his blue robe and gold crown was winning a massive battle against fear.
What of Harvey you ask! He has no such battles to win. When mum asked him on Saturday if he needed to practise his lines he ran through them seamlessly and, to use his own words, it’s all about the “dramatic delivery”!
